Pontevedra's Beaches.
The rias Baixas, or lower bays of Galicia, are littered with beaches and Pontevedra can lay claim to many of them. Three large rias can be found in this province and they are, from north to south, Ria de Arousa, Ria de Pontevedra and Ria de Vigo.
The Arousa bay is the largest in this area, although the bay of Vigo is actually the longest extending over 30 km in length. Pontevedra's self named bay is quite small and also has some islands at its mouth.
This page will soon be expanded to cover other beaches in the Pontevedra province, but for now here are four beaches with a brief summary of what they have to offer.
- La playa de Melide (sanxenxo), which is quite small and can get crowded. It has the typically calm sea and white sand associated with the inlets and rias of Galicia.
- La playa de Lapaman, which is about 1 mile long with shallow calm waters and white sands. This beach can get busy.
- La playa de America, a very large beach, over 3/4 mile in length, that can get very busy at peak times. The sand is white, but the sea is not as calm as some of the other beaches nearby.
- If you want a quieter less populated beach, then try the one at Arnelas which has white sand, calm sea and fewer tourists.
This section is due for an update before December 2005.
