Designer Radiators

Until very recently the household radiator has been regarded as a necessary, but very unattractive feature of almost every home. For anyone with a central heating system radiators are essential, but their design has made them something to be disguised, hidden, or failing that, simply ignored.

Times have however changed and the common radiator is common no more! We now have "designer radiators".

The emergence of stylish designer radiators

The last twenty years have seen the radiator start to evolve into something closer to a design form with stainless steel, brushed metal and brightly coloured radiators fast becoming the norm.

Bathroom radiators were the first to benefit from this modern makeover as old style radiators became stylish modern tubular towel rails and the designer radiator was born.

Then came the different finishes with the clean looking stainless steel radiator establishing itself as a favourite.

Real designer radiators started to emerge when more adventurous designs like the "tower" and "column" radiators started to appear on the market. These tall stylish radiators broke all the rules and actually added to, rather than diminished, the aesthetic value of a room. You can see examples of this on this page of the designerradiator.net/radiatortypes.html website which describes and illustrates many of these radiators.

More modern radiator designs

Variations on the tall and narrow tower radiator were the next big milestone as "wave" radiators started to emerge.

Wave radiators avoided the use of straight vertical radiator pipes and used a wave shape to great dramatic effect. These radiators could also be found in different colours from pastel shades to matt black and their arrival saw designer radiators emerge from the bathroom and migrate into reception rooms, bedrooms and offices.

These designer radiators were also becoming widely available and at affordable prices. Units that cost in excess of one thousand dollars were now no more than double the cost of a conventional radiator – and in many cases even less.

The next generation of designer radiators

The designer radiator is still evolving and at an ever increasing rate.

Today you can buy radiators that have a "flat panel" effect and look nothing like a regular radiator.

Some radiators are designed to look like tubular sculptures and have a full three dimensional appearance, whilst others even include their own back lightning or have a mirrored appearance. The newest and most innovative radiators simply look nothing like radiators at all.

The other big move in radiator design is to have many of these designer-look radiators available in electric powered formats. This enables these stylish and iconic heating units to be fitted anywhere where there is a mains electricity socket and it also means that the most striking radiators can be moved around – almost like furniture!

Radiators as ornaments

Perhaps the most recent and innovative use of radiator design is to incorporate their style and looks into the decor of a room as ornimentation.
